The Nutcracker: Behind the Scenes with the Stage Crew

CVDA Seniors Shine Backstage

When the curtain rises, audiences are transported to a magical world. But what happens behind the scenes to make the magic happen? For the Chester Valley Dance Academy Stage Crew, the experience is an adventure of its own. CVDA Seniors Sarah, Elizabeth, Brendan, and Colm share a glimpse into their behind-the-scenes journey.

The Stage Crew is an integral part of the production, seamlessly orchestrating the transitions that bring The Nutcracker to life. From managing props and sets to ensuring every scene change happens flawlessly, their work is a ballet of its own. One of the most impressive feats is the transformation of the cozy Act 1 living room into an enchanting snow forest. As the stage becomes a glistening backdrop for the iconic Waltz of the Snowflakes, the audience sees the magic, but it’s the crew’s precision and timing that make it possible.

Beyond these large-scale changes, the stage crew also handles countless smaller, yet equally critical tasks: moving Clara’s nutcracker to its rightful spot, operating the fog machines that create an air of mystery and magic, and assisting dancers in numerous quick changes throughout the show. Each team member is responsible for a vital piece of the puzzle, working together to maintain the flow of the performance without a single misstep.

Sarah has been an essential part of the backstage team since her freshman year, finding joy in every aspect of her role. “My favorite part about stage crew is how much fun it is to be backstage and help everything come together,” Sarah shares. She especially loves working with the Angels during The Nutcracker. “They’re all so excited for their first time on stage.”

From moving set pieces to helping with quick costume changes and last-minute fixes, Sarah has done it all. Her favorite part? The collaborative nature of backstage life. “I love helping all the pieces come together and being a part of everything that goes on there.” For Sarah, being backstage has its perks. “I don’t have to worry about hair or makeup for myself,” she says, “but it’s so fun to help other people.”

Elizabeth assists the Angels before they go on stage.

Elizabeth joined the Nutcracker stage crew from working recital, “I also helped during our annual opening number for our recital, which made me want to help during The Nutcracker,” she recalls. Her favorite part of the job? “Probably all of the fun behind-the-scenes work we get to do! Between the new friendships and great life skills, we all have a great time amidst the busyness.” Elizabeth’s responsibilities range from working the fog machine to preparing dancers for the stage and managing props. “When the anticipation of the rising curtain kicks in, everyone backstage is fixing and checking everything to ensure we have the best show possible.”

Brendan and Colm have been helping hands backstage for a number of years and are responsible for the clock in the party and battle scene. Like Sarah and Elizabeth, they also love working the fog machine. Brendan and Colm can also be seen as parents in the party scene. They recall this as a special role. Colm shares, “I love being a Dad on stage, leaning into comedic moments, and watching the show while being in it.”

Both Sarah and Elizabeth agree that being part of the stage crew has deepened their appreciation for The Nutcracker. “A lot of people don’t realize how much work truly goes into our productions,” Elizabeth explains. “Being backstage, you find a whole new appreciation for everything that goes on…Whether with props, quick changes, or just general backstage work, it’s always a great learning and bonding experience.”
